Reading to Resistance Book Club with AFSSA and A Better Force – DVAM Edition

We are so excited to announce our third session for our quarterly book club ‘Reading to Resistance’ hosted by A Better Force and AFSSA on Oct 18 (Sunday) from 2 – 4 PM at Birdhouse Books!
How do we move away from the idea that one romantic partner will solve all our problems? How do we bring our best thinking about freedom and justice into step with our desires for healing and connection? In our upcoming session, we will be discussing ‘Love in a F*cked-Up World’ by Dean Spade, which gives us a practical manifesto for how to combat cultural scripts and take our relationships into our own hands.
If you’d like your own copy of the book, we encourage folks to get it from Birdhouse Books, our gracious hosts for this book club series. They currently have physical copies of the book in stock at their store. Alternatively, you can also check out copies from your local library or the Libby app.
Why are we hosting this book club series? Because reading asks us to pay attention, both to ourselves and the world around us. Our book club discussions will be a space to reflect on how these teachings can point us to a path of collective safety and liberation.
October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). We believe the lessons offered in ‘Love In A F*cked Up World’ go hand-in-hand with AFSSA’s mission to prevent domestic violence and all types of abuse in Asian communities. In order to stop the cycles of violence, we must learn how to nurture our current relationships in a healthy and equitable way.Don’t miss out!
